現在ハーヴァード大学教授である著者は、本来古代末期からビザンツ史を専攻する。千ページを越える本書は執筆に足掛け十年を要したらしいが、たった十年でこれだけのものが書けるところが欧米の秀才の底力であろうか。通読は困難でも各章の最後にまとめがあり、それを読めば梗概はつかめる。奴隷制は古代から初期中世社会を考えるにあたってはずすことのできないテーマであるが、史料の関係で接近がなかなか難しい。とくにヨーロッパの北側でも、ヴェルダンの市にみられるように奴隷交易はある程度の規模を誇っていたと考えられるが、地中海側ほど体系的な調査がされたわけではないように思う。
著者の学位論文は、

であるが、ベルギーのレオポール・ジェニコのもとで完成させたと記憶している。ブレポルス社から1972年以来続く史料類型のシリーズに、
M. McCormick, Les annales du haut moyen âge（Typologie des sources du Moyen Age occidental 14）. Turnhout: Brepols, 1975, 65 p.
を寄稿しているのもその関係だろうか。これはジェニコがはじめた叢書である。
初期中世の経済を論じる研究者は、以前ほど多くはない。意気盛んなのは考古学者である。
Early medieval Europa 12-3（2003）
に本書の出版を記念した特集があり、エドワード・ジェームズが序文を寄せている。
メロン財団から150万ドルの助成を得て進める次のプロジェクトはいかにもアメリカらしい。どのような成果が生み出されるのか、楽しみといえば楽しみだが、もはや人文学として想像できる範囲を超えている。こういうのを学際的というのだろうか。
